You can visit ALLUMINOUS in different ways. The festival is set up as a walking route. All lighting along the route and placement of the artworks around the Weerwater are arranged to view the work from the Rondje Weerwater, right next to the Weerwater.
But of course you can also take the light art route by bike. And there is even a shuttle boat!
We would like to briefly explain to all visitors what you should pay attention to when you walk, cycle or even sail during your visit to ALLUMINOUS:
WALKING
ALLUMINOUS is organised as a walking route. Are you visiting ALLUMINOUS on foot? On the map you follow the YELLOW dotted line.
Follow the order of the numbers of the artworks. So walk clockwise around the Weerwater. Then you will automatically come across everything from our programme!
Please note: Sometimes the walking and cycling routes cross along the route. Then we will make sure that there are signs that explain where you can best walk.
Also important: The lighting of the walking route is there half to make it clear where you have to walk, but certainly also half for the safety of all our visitors! And that lighting is designed for walkers who follow the route according to the numbers on the Map. This makes every dark path safer for every visitor!
If you walk the walking route in the other direction along the light art route: that is possible, but then the walk becomes a lot more complicated (with a lot of fellow visitors who get in the way of a relaxed visit to the festival...)
CYCLING
Of course you can also visit the light art route by bike. On the map you follow the PINK dotted line.
At every work of art and every other important location along the route (such as the three catering squares with live music and food trucks) there are bicycle sheds. This way you can cycle to the location, leave your bike for a while, and walk to the work of art or something else.
Please note: Sometimes the cycling and walking routes cross along the route. In that case, we will ensure that there are signs explaining where you can best cycle.
We will place barriers at a few places along the route to keep the walkers and cyclists apart. This is mainly to prevent possible accidents in the dark.
OUR ALLUMINOUS SHUTTLE BOAT
The ALLUMINOUS route along all the light artworks is 5.5 km. If you think that is too long, you can choose to take the shuttle boat. It departs from the Esplanade Pier (next to Strand22) and from the Hortus Pier (next to Price - in the Hortus district).
This way, you can shorten your visit to ALLUMINOUS with the shuttle boat, or for example spread your festival visit over two evenings: Take the boat to the other side and walk back, and then walk to the other side the next evening and take the boat back!
- Shuttle boat tickets can be purchased at both departure locations at the ALLUMINOUS information desks, one hour before the shuttle boat departure time.
- Shuttle boat departure times from Esplanade Pier are: 6:00 PM / 7:00 PM / 8:00 PM / 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM (Fridays and Saturdays only).
- Shuttle boat departure times from Hortus Pier are: 6:30 PM / 7:30 PM / 8:30 PM / 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM (Fridays and Saturdays only)
- Shuttle boat ticket prices: Adults (12 years and older): €5, children (4-11 years) €2.50, children up to 4 years: free (on an adult's lap).
- At the information desks, only debit cards are accepted, no cash. The ticket price is for a single trip to the other side of the Weerwater, so it is not a tour boat.
- Tip - If you use the shuttle boat: the skippers will be happy to tell you more about the program and the works of art that the boat passes!
