This year ALLUMINOUS invites you to decipher Morse code that we send out from the lighthouse on Utopia Island. Will you join us?
Please note: We can only send Dutch words in Morse-code for this challenge. Otherwise the code would become to complicated to decipher.
The morse code messages we send out from the lighthouse on Utopia island are in Dutch. As are the questions we place on the instruction sign on the Oeverpromenade every day.
We understand not all of our audience speaks or reads Dutch. But we decided sending out the morse code in two languages would be too confusing for our audience (as morse code is hard anyway, to decipher).
Hoe werkt het:
- We are looking for 1 word, which is repeated every time
- Start after the blue light
- Between each letter emitted in Morse light signals there is a few seconds of silence
Tip! Take notes (on your phone for example)
TO WIN:
- Follow our Instagram
- Send a DM with your answer
- We announce a daily winner every day at 23:00h
How does Morse work? It's not that difficult at all!
Below you will find an explanation of Morse code per letter.
- A dot is a short signal (one count)
- A dash is a long signal (2 seconds)
- It is briefly dark between the letters
- After each word we send out a blue light, then the code starts again
Fun facts about Morse code
Morse code is a means of communication that allows you to send a text message using light (for example a lamp or laser, even a flashlight) or sound (beeps that you send over the radio, for example). It is actually very simple: each letter in the alphabet, and each number, has its own code that consists of a series of short or long signals.
You just have to be able to decipher the code…
Morse code was invented in 1844 by Samuel Morse, who the code is named after. It has since been widely used to communicate between ships at sea, but also in times of war. Or to send distress signals. There are different Morse code versions per language, but in this competition we use the international Morse code that is used all over the world.
Please note: a new question is posted every day on the board on the Oeverpromenade in Stedenwijk (near Ermelopad). However: that question is ready from 18:00h, when the festival is officially open to visitors. If you come earlier that day, you may still see the question from the previous day on the board. The date is stated on the sticker with 'today's Morse code question' at the bottom right. From 18:00, the Morse code that is sent from the lighthouse on Utopia Island is adjusted for that day!
