Light lines appear on the dark Weerwater, reminiscent of a helicopter platform or runway at an airport. But instead of a signal to a pilot (or spaceship), the lights disappear into a black hole, as if the Weerwater could suddenly empty. Is the Weerwater, as an artificial lake, just like a bathtub from which you can simply pull the plug? Or a place where dark and inexplicable phenomena happen almost unnoticed if we don't pay attention?
This work of art shows that optical illusions using light as an artistic material can be magic. In addition to being a technological experiment, Illusion Hole is a spectacular visual illusion. Whether it is a black hole in the Weerwater, or whatever you as a viewer make of it, fantasize about it, it can all be as real as what you observe, with your own eyes. Or not?
Illusion Hole is the sixth artwork by UxU studio from Taiwan that revolves around optical illusions through geometric patterns of light, as part of the artwork series 'Use Your Illusion'.
About the artist
UxU Studio
UxU Studio, founded in 2011 by Kuan-Hung Chen and Ying-Chu Chen, is a Taiwanese collective of architects, designers and artists. Their experimental, multidisciplinary approach leads to surprising (light) objects, which are often made from simple and everyday materials. Sometimes this results in large installations to wander around or just sit quietly in. Other times they enlarge or reduce a recognizable thing or image to a surreal size.
